S2’s Library

‘S2’ is military parlance for the Intelligence Section, specifically at the Battalion level.  Here’s a collection of books, documents, and manuals that should be on every Intelligence Officer’s bookshelf.

Recommended Reading:

Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife: Counterinsurgency Lessons from Malaya and Vietnam.  If you don’t understand popular support, then you don’t understand insurgency/counterinsurgency.  This book was a must read before multiple deployments, and there’s a reason why it’s required reading among colonels, captains, lieutenants, and sergeants.  There are too many important lessons in this book to not read it.

The S2’s Library is currently undergoing a major overhaul.  Please check back later.

you recently mentioned : an Appalachian Redoubt. I wonder if you could expound on this since I am currently living in the Appalachians.

      Reggie-
It’s my understanding that the Cumberland Plateau is generally considered the Eastern Redoubt; some have it going as far north as PA, others the physical plateau itself only.
      Hope this helps.

“The Art of Thinking Clearly” by Rolf Dobelli – great (contemporary) book on identifying and countering mental bias. Zurich Minds is an impressive collection of global deep thinkers.

How are people still listening to John Nagl? This is one of the biggest idiots today that still praise NeoCon “tactics” to mire the US in nation-building and COIN.
